A garment and fashion tailor measures, cuts and stitches fabric into finished garments, carries out alterations, and ensures every piece meets the required size, fit and finish. You work from patterns or customer measurements, operate single-needle and overlock machines, and handle hand-finishing such as buttons, hems and zips.

Because boutiques and factories work to deadlines and quality standards, neat stitching, accurate measurements and steady speed matter most. Tailors coordinate with cutting masters and supervisors and keep their workstation, machine and tools clean and ready.

A typical day starts by checking the day’s order list, threading and oiling the machine, and collecting cut pieces from the cutting table. You stitch garments to the given pattern, carry out alterations, hand-finish hems, buttons and zips, and pass each piece for quality checking before moving to the next order.

Approx. INR: QAR 1,900 ≈ ₹43,700 and QAR 2,800 ≈ ₹64,400 per month (rates vary).

1. Measure, cut and stitch fabric into finished garments as per pattern or order.
2. Carry out alterations — resizing, hemming, taking in or letting out garments.
3. Operate single-needle, overlock and other industrial sewing machines safely.
4. Hand-finish garments: buttons, hooks, zips, hems and final pressing.
5. Check size, fit and stitching quality before passing the piece on.
6. Keep the workstation, machine and cutting tools clean and well-maintained.
7. Coordinate with the cutting master and supervisor on daily targets.
8. Reduce fabric wastage and report any machine fault or material shortage.

You work indoors in a well-lit garment workshop, boutique or factory floor with rows of industrial sewing machines, air-conditioning and a quality-checking area. Shifts are organised, uniforms and tools are provided, and supervisors set daily order targets while maintaining a safe, clean stitching environment.

Standard duty is around 8–10 hours per day, 6 days a week, usually on rotational shifts that may include mornings, evenings or nights. Overtime is paid separately as per Qatar Labour Law, and a weekly rest day plus paid annual leave are provided under the employment contract. Employers also provide uniforms, safety gear and on-the-job training where needed.

Because accommodation, food and transport are usually provided, most workers save a large part of their tax-exempt salary. A typical worker keeps the majority of their pay, with only small personal costs like a SIM card, mobile data, toiletries and occasional outings.
